A long way off, but still in our backyard

You might think Utah’s a long way off, but we Californians have a real stake in this project.

Glen Canyon Dam (which backs up Lake Powell) was created specifically to keep the water from making it to the "Lower Basin" states (CA, NV and AZ). Utah’s trying to get a stake on their claim so they can keep growing down in St. George (Utah’s Dixie), and so we (and, especially, Las Vegas) can’t "steal" the water out from under them. On the other hand, because of climate change, there’s a fairly good chance that Lake Powell may soon be history, even if the Glen Canyon Dam remains. That would make building a pipeline to tap Lake Powell a "Pipeline to Nowhere," which could be an even bigger boondoogle than the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere."
