HOWS

There was a big banner hanging from the HOWS supermarket at Huntington and San Gabriel yesterday, announcing that the store was staying open forever. I had no idea what that sign was all about until I read today's Los Angeles Times.

Founded in 1999 by the Hughes family, HOWS was an acronym of the names of Hughes and the other financiers behind the upscale supermarket chain. They had six stores, but will retrench to just the "Pasadena" store.

The store is not actually in Pasadena, but in unincorporated North San Gabriel. It shares a strip mall with B-Man's Teriyaki, which is what the guy behind Spike's started up after leaving that small local chain. I think there are three B-Man's, and no more Spike's.
