Graffiti-Related Death

What kind of a useless waste of oxygen would murder someone just so they can spray some crap on a wall?

Big Brother Will be Watching You, at Least in Montebello

Interesting story about the use of cameras to fight crime in Montebello, although I’m not sure if these cameras would actually fight dumping, graffiti, and crime, or just move it to other locations where there aren’t any cameras.

Mixed-Use Design Standards, Hearing and Adoption of Negative Declaration -- August 20, 2007 -- 7pm

On the front page of the city's website, www.cityofrosemead.org, is an announcement of a public hearing scheduled for the August 20 Planning Commission meeting.  The hearing will be focused on the city's proposed mixed-use design standards and the proposal to adopt a negative declaration (no significant environmental impact if the standards are adopted).

West Covina's Electoral Process

Supporters of an initiative that would shift West Covina from "at-large" to "by-district" representation say they have gathered enough petition signatures to qualify the initiative. They hope to have this qualified for the November ballot.

However, because of the several delays it took to get the petition approved for circulation by the city attorney, I don’t think that’s realistic. And that could mean a special election (possibly as late as mid-January), at a cost of close to $100,000.

Rosemead National Night Out -- Rosemead Public Safety Center

[New material added below]

As part of the National Night Out event, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is hosting an event at the Rosemead Public Safety Center, 3018 Charlotte Ave.  It's in Zapopan Park, off of Garvey, just east of Beach's.  Tuesday, August 7, 6pm -8pm.  I have heard that hot dogs and red hots are on the menu.

This would be a chance to see the new public safety center and meet with some of the deputies that patrol our streets.

Tofu Festival Coming August 18-19

http://www.tofufest.org/

Hard to believe it's already the 12th Annual L.A. Tofu Festival that's right around the corner.  They had free entry coupons in both the L.A. Times and SGV Tribune newspapers this last Sunday.  If you've already tossed your newspapers out, you can print out a discount coupon at the website linked above.

Rosemead Beauty School

Anyone seeing me the past few weeks may have noticed I'm getting a little shaggy.  That's 'cause I messed up on the timing of the summer break at the Rosemead Beauty School.  But I think they come back from break on Tuesday, so I can finally get my hair cut.  (On the other hand, if they're off for another week still, then I may need to break down and go someplace else).

The Murder Bus to Monrovia's Farmer's Market

I get a giggle everytime I visit thefcblog and read about the "Murder Bus."  (Foothill Transit #187, which is also the police code for homocide--these are the things you learn when you grow up watching Adam-12).

I ride 187 about once a month--more in the summer, less often in the winter.  It runs between Claremont and Pasadena, with a stop at the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line station.  West of Sierra Madre Villa, it mostly runs on Colorado.  But it heads north on San Gabriel, east on Foothill, enters and exits the Sierra Madre Villa Station, then continues east on Foothill.  Then it's south on Rosemead, then east on Colorado.  East of the race track, you find yourself on Huntington.  Three or four miles past the race track, you hit Myrtle.
