Saving Money, Building Parks, and Addressing Sexual Predators

Just a few more loose ends from last night's meeting:

Our city's employees are going to be staying with PERS as their health care provider.  Had we been able to complete our migration to Cigna, the city could have saved $250/employee/month.  That's somewhat over $100,000 over the course of a year.  It's unfortunate that certain council members who like to present themselves as guardians of the public treasury did not allow the shift to occur.

City Council Agendas

I’m not 100 percent certain, but, near as I can determine, this is all the city code says about placing items on the agenda of a city council meeting:

2.04.050 Presenting matter to Council.

Every official, board, commission or other body connected with the city government and every citizen, individual, corporation, committee or civic group having any reports, communications or other matters to be presented at a Council meeting shall notify the City Clerk of that fact and the subject thereof in writing before noon of the Thursday preceding the day of such meeting, whereupon the City Clerk shall prepare an agenda setting forth such matters and the nature thereof under the headings set forth in Section 2.04.060, and setting forth all other matters to come before such meeting. The City Clerk shall, not later than Friday preceding such meeting, cause one copy thereof to be delivered to each councilmember. Matters deemed by the City Council to be of emergency are excepted from the foregoing provision. This section does not apply to oral communications from the audience when a Council meeting is in session. (Prior code § 2704)

Rosemead Concert in the Park --Friday, August 31, 5-8pm

This Friday, Rosemead is holding its first evening "Concert in the Park," 5pm - 8pm at Rosemead Park.

They'll be bringing out the stage they use for the Fourth of July events.  On stage from 5-6pm, it's Teadro Jones; from 6pm - 8pm, it's "Knight Fever."  Wish I could tell you what kind of music they play, but it'll be as much a surprise to me as to many of you.  If you want to see the flyer announcing the concerts, it's here:

Stupid TV Shows Coming in the Fall

Been seeing a lot of promos for the new shows that'll be starting in the fall.  Most of them look pretty stupid.  I'll just pick on one.  The rest of you are free to nominate your own.  Or maybe I'll just keep adding one every day  until I run out?  We'll see.

    My choice:  Viva Laughlin.

I haven't read any of the entertainment news sources, so I don't know what the "hook" is supposed to be.  But, really:  Laughlin?  Why not a show called, "Viva Pechanga" or "Viva Cabazon"?  Is this supposed to be like "Las Vegas," but with more rednecks?  Is this a story about people who are too stoned to make it in Sin City?  I don't see the appeal.

Looking for Mr (or Ms) City Manager. . . .

Here’s a post from thefcblog that notes the various city manager searches currently on-going in the area, and the trials and tribulations of being a city manager. They also link to a SGVN article on the same topic.

Rosemead Parks Along Edison Right of Way

Hey, a positive story about Rosemead! :D

There’s a story in the SGV Tribune about a proposal to build a trail/park network out of the Edison powerline right-of-way that cuts through our city. It sounds like this grew out of Assemblyman Mike Eng’s visit to Rosemead last week.

I like this idea, and I think some of our other posters may also like the idea. After all, we’ve blogged about converting some of these right-of-ways into parks in the past.

Burke, Williams, Sorensen

On August 14, the Rosemead City Council, meeting as the Community Development Commission, voted 4-0 to negotiate a deal with Burke, Williams, Sorensen, LLP to serve as redevelopment attorney.  The law firm's home page is here:  http://www.bwslaw.com/

Gary Taylor did not attend the CDC meeting, took no part in the interview process, and did not cast a vote among the applicants.
