"It depends on what your definition of 'wall' is. . . ."

Remember during those hearings back in fall, 2004, when Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart's sock puppets in the audience all stood up and told us how neighboring residents didn't need to worry about the effects of a 24-hour Wal-Mart supercenter, because there'd be a beautiful, decorative wall, covered with climbing vines, that would separate the residential area from the supercenter?  They lied.

I suppose I should no longer be surprised when Wal-Mart and their sock puppets pull this crap on us.  But their hypocrisy, their double-talk, and the true depths of their dishonesty continue to amaze me.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer Files Amicus Brief

http://www.sgvtribune.com/ci_4129161

California's Attorney General, Bill Lockyer, filed an amicus curiae brief in support of Save Our Community's suit that challenged Wal-Mart's sham environmental impact report of last year.  The case is currently pending before a California state appellate court.

That's big news for us because now it means that the travesty perpetrated on Rosemead residents when our city council ratified a flawed and incomplete environmental impact report has now been recognized at the highest levels of California's government.

Great Turnout on Kick-off Weekend!

Julie has already sent out an e-mail to our members this, but for those of you not already on our e-mail list, let me tell you that the first weekend of our precinct walking was a huge success.  The clubhouse was packed on Saturday morning, where we got a rousing send-off from many of our local elected officials.

I understand we had a steady stream of walkers passing through the area on Sunday, as well.

Friends of Victor Ruiz Fundraiser--August 11, 2006, 7pm

As previously noted Victor Ruiz has a fundraiser scheduled for Friday, August 11, 2006.  Victor Ruiz and Polly Low are the only candidates for Rosemead City Council endorsed by Save Our Community/YOR.

It is extremely important that folks who are tired of being ignored by the current majority on Rosemead City Council stand in support of these reform candidates.  Unlike their opponents, no one from Bentonville is going to write them checks for $10,000, $15,000, or even $30,000 at a time.  They need to rely upon the support of individuals such as yourselves.  I hope we can get another good turnout and give Mike Lewis another coronary.

Yard Signs!

Both Polly Low and Victor Ruiz have yard signs available to support their respective campaigns.

e-mail news@saveourcommunity.us if you want one.

Informal Get-Together at Victor Ruiz's House, Friday, August 4, 6:00 pm

Victor Ruiz (who, along with Polly Low, has been endorsed by Save Our Community/Yes on Recall for one of the vacancies that will be created following the recall of the incumbents) has invited SOC members to his house for dinner.  The invitation is for 6:00 pm, Friday, August 4.

Victor's house is located at 9703 Olney St., Rosemead, CA  91770.  Phone:  626-448-3552.

Confounding Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart has begun another "public opinion" survey in Rosemead.  To reduce the usefulness of their results, you might consider answering "creatively" when it comes to the demographic questions.

Of course, they're only marginally concerned about your actual answers to these questions, because these are pretty much the same questions they've asked at least twice previously.  I think their real goal is to conduct a "push poll," in which they're actually using the survey as a ruse to present biased information to change your opinion on the recall and the Wal-Mart.  That's the only way I can explain why they'd conduct a third wave of "sampling" on these same questions.  It's also the only way I can explain why so many of us keep getting phone calls.

Fundraiser a Resounding Success

Thanks to the many of you who dug deep and contributed to Polly Low's fundraiser, which was held July 20 at the 888 Seafood Restaurant.  Thanks also to the phone tree volunteers who worked so hard to publicize and encourage our members to attend.  None of our volunteers are particularly wealthy, so I know it was hard asking them to make contributions of as much as $2000 to attend the fundraiser.
