Fundraiser a Resounding Success

Thanks to the many of you who dug deep and contributed to Polly Low's fundraiser, which was held July 20 at the 888 Seafood Restaurant.  Thanks also to the phone tree volunteers who worked so hard to publicize and encourage our members to attend.  None of our volunteers are particularly wealthy, so I know it was hard asking them to make contributions of as much as $2000 to attend the fundraiser.

Approximately 220 people attended at least part of the event, including nearly 40 active SOC/YOR members.  Dozens of others who could not attend also sent in contributions or pledged their support.  Over a dozen area elected officials who have endorsed Victor and Polly were in attendance, including Assemblywoman Judy Chu, Rosemead City Councilman John Tran, Rosemead Mayor Pro Tem John Nunez, and city council members from Monterey Park, South El Monte and West Covina, and school board members from Garvey and Alhambra School Districts. (I'm thinking I'm leaving someone out, so if anyone recalls, let me know or post that information below.  Most of the elected officials are in the attached photo, but I think a couple of folks came by later).

The restaurant is an unfortunately noisey venue.  I think a lot of the noise was coming from the karaoke room, where, I think, Miss Chinese Taiwan USA was holding court.  But Judy Chu and Mike Eng, in particular, did a great job of raising the roof on our side of the building.

A special uninvited guest briefly poked his head in the room, just as things were getting started:  Mike Lewis, Wal-Mart's hired gun from West Covina.  I'm sure he was hoping to find an empty room, and was shocked at the size of our crowd.  He probably ran back to his car and immediately called Bentonville to ask for more money.
