Rosemead News

Stories about the city or area that aren't specifically about SOC, Wal-Mart or related issues.

This week's summary

Of news from the city manager's newsletter

May 26th, 10am:  Rosemead Memorial Day ceremony.  This involves a flag raising (and lowering--as I recall, last year, they properly raised it to full height then backed it off to half-mast) and wreath laying in front of the city's Vietnam War memorial.  There'll also be politicians making speeches, but you probably already knew that!

From the City Manager's Newsletter

Some highlights; I'm sure none of this info is privileged:

Rush/Angelus Traffic Study:  Firm secured; results should be presented to the Traffic Commission in mid- to late-June.  It'll then go to the city council in July or August.

Duff School:  Although the name sounds straight out of The Simpson's, it's not.  It's a Garvey School District elementary school that will likely be closing next year due to continuing declining enrollment in Rosemead.  This will be the second closure in three years, which may surprise those who keep warning of "overcrowded" schools in Rosemead. . . .

4th of July Parade

"Celebrating the Stars and Stripes Forever!"

No, last year wasn't a one-off; Rosemead's annual parade is back for good, and it's that time of the year again.  We hope you all liked last year's; this year, we're trying some new things to make the parade even better.  And we need your help to do it.

One new thing is giant balloons.  They will be like the ones in the Macy's parade, but not as big.  To carry them, though, we need walkers, about 30 or so in all.  So we are looking for people who want to be in the parade and help out with this.  We need adults who are in reasonably good condition, as the balloons are big, and you will need to walk with them for the entire route (about 1.2 miles).

Planning Commission meeting, Monday, May 19

7pm at the Rosemead Community Center.  Not much going on tomorrow.  The only item on the agenda is for a Verizon Wireless antenna at 8306 Garvey Avenue.  It's proposed to be on an electricity transmission tower owned by Edison, in Zapopan Park.

City council meeting on Tuesday; Valley Vision on Thursday

Two city meetings this week (May 13 and May 15). The full city council agenda and CDC agendas are here.  A short summary of the items is here. CDC meets at 6pm and the city council meets at 7pm in the Rosemead Community Center, located immediately south of the public library, on Muscatel (south of Valley).

Busted!

Always nice to read about bad guys getting busted. . . .

Repost: Postal Worker's food drive

Link to Brian’s original post, about the Postal Worker’s food drive. Locally, People for People is looking for volunteers to help with the transportation and sorting of the food collected. If you can’t volunteer to help with transporting the food, feel free to contribute food, instead. Leave non-perishable foods near your mailbox on May 10.
