Rosemead News

Stories about the city or area that aren't specifically about SOC, Wal-Mart or related issues.

Public Safety Enforcement/Actions

Yep, it's Friday.  Just completed a slew of new posts for the site.  The last one for today:  Public safety actions for the week:

323 active code enforcement cases/49 cases cleared/abated

66 shopping carts collected

947 square feet of graffiti removed from 43 locations

Keep adding up these totals, week by week.  The amount of work undertaken by our public safety and code enforcement teams is substantial, and it's helping to make our city more livable.

Wal-Mart Transformer

City conversations with Edison and Wal-Mart over the transformer continue.  "Currently, we are exploring the possibility of placing some sort of protective screen around the existing transformer" (that's from the city manager's newsletter).

I assume by "screen" they mean something more than the green fencing screen that's currently on the Wal-Mart/Panda property line.  Practically-speaking, I think a solid protective barrier that could prevent a runaway car or truck from taking out the transformer (and simultaenously shield nearby residents from the humming noise of the transformer) might be the best alternative.  Regardless, I also think a case can be made that any alternative short of placing the entire transformer below-ground would require the Planning Commission to approve a change in the current conditions of approval for the Wal-Mart project.

Angelus/Rush/Delta Traffic Study

A staff presentation on traffic at this corner is scheduled for Thursday, June 26 before the Rosemead Traffic Commission.

At this time, the staff is not recommending traffic lights, but will present other traffic calming alternatives for the commission's consideration.

Fourth of July Parade, Fireworks, and Celebration

Reminder and a link to older posts on the subject.

An announcement was in the last Rosemead Resources, and I think door hangers have aleady been hung.  (Personally, I'd have had a few days separate the two, for a bigger impact).  Also, they should be getting a big banner strung over Valley any day now.

Parade in the morning, carnival in the afternoon, and fireworks at night.  And it's all FREE!

Vacancies on the Planning and Traffic Commission

The city's website, www.cityofrosemead.org, has now got a notice that they are accepting applications for people interested in sitting on either the Planning or Traffic commissions.  The deadline to apply is Wednesday, July 2 at noon.  The application form is available on the city website.

Rosemead Park

Rosemead’s parks don’t have some of the amenities you find at, for example, Alhambra parks. But that’ll start changing, bit by bit. Here’s a story from a few days ago.

I’m not sure how a path that runs along the park’s perimeter can simultaneously run through the middle of anything, let alone "the middle of the park’s family area." I didn’t even know the park had a "family area."

Bogus Address Painting Service

I arrived home late yesterday evening and was approached by a gentleman who claimed he would repaint the address in front of my home for a $10.00 donation - upfront - and that he would come the next day to paint the address. I asked him if he was employed by the city which seemed to catch him off guard. He claimed he was a "subcontractor" and did not have any business cards or company identification with him. Needless to say, after these questions he got in his car and left. I contacted the city and of course this is not legit. Its a heads up for everyone.

Last night's city counci meeting

I couldn’t make it to last night’s city council meeting because my grades were due today. [I just turned them in about twenty minutes ago, over thirty minutes before the deadline! :D].

Jennifer McLain has a very short summary of the meeting here. If anyone else wishes to add to it, I’d appreciate it.
