Harvard Stuff

A couple stories tangentially related to a topic that came up here:  Making Harvard more affordable, and a related story, about Caltech.

Montebello Recall Election

Montebello voters overwhelmingly recalled councilman Jeff Sicama, 72% YES to 28% NO. He will be succeeded by former Montebello councilwoman Mary Anne Saucedo.

Rosemead Youth Association -- Postive story that got lost in the shuffle

.     You'd almost think the editors at the SGVN don't want any positive stories to come out about Rosemead.  The story below was posted to their website at 9:46am on Wednesday, but was pulled almost immediately.  Most curious.
.     So, in case you missed it, the city council awarded the organization a nice chunk of money, while the city attorney announced he would work pro bono to help the RYA recover the money that was taken by the previous group of managers.  Here's the story:

Serial Suicide Jumper in Duarte

The fcblog had a pointer to this story from yesterday’s San Gabriel Valley Tribune, about a serial suicide jumper in Duarte.

I’m sure it says something odd about me that the part that caught my eye was this line:

San Gabriel Valley News Group

Letter from Barbara Murphy. (Sixth letter down on the Star-News website).

By they way, how do you guys like their new web design?  On the one hand, it's cleaner.  But it also loads much slower.  And it's more work to get to the blogs.

After an election, reconciliation

Roger Hernandez moves up to Mayor Pro-Tem in West Covina.

What a concept!  After an election, they can actually stop bickering for a while and get some work done?  I bet they don't start getting misleading flyers in the mail in West Covina, at least not until the next election.

Not so in Rosemead, where the campaigning for March 2009 began almost before the ballots from 2007 were even counted.

Street Racing Death

This doesn’t upset me quite as much as the graffiti-related deaths of a few months ago, but it’s close: Street-racing death, at the corner of Rosemead and Las Tunas.

It's also a reminder of how arbitrary life's decisions can be.  If either of the cars involved had hit the road a few moments earlier or later, at least one, and, possibly, two lives would have been very different.
