City Council Meets Tuesday, June 26, 7pm

Even though the agenda was not posted to the city web site, it was posted at city hall.  There is a city council meeting on Tuesday, June 26 at 7pm.  From the looks of the various agendas posted there (much of which will occur in closed session), it looks like several major developments are going forward.

Also, while the various agendas are not on the city web site, the proposed new design guidelines for mixed-use development is up on the web site.

Parade Info

Just a reminder that our Rosemead Fourth of July Parade is a "Go."  It's going to start at 10am on the Fourth of July at Walnut Grove and Valley.  It'll then head east, cross Rosemead, then turn left on Loma, cross Mission, and end at Rosemead Park.

The theme for this year's parade is "Salute to Our Military."

The city is looking for area veterans and active duty personnel to join in the parade.  If you're interested or know someone who might be interested, call Pedro Castillo of Rosemead Parks & Rec, at 626-569-2266.

Mixed-Use Workshop/General Plan Update Status Report

At the next planning commission meeting, the planning departent staff will be doing a workshop (presentation) on the two items noted above.  Both items are in the process of being drafted, and both are going to be very important in shaping the future appearance and development of our city.

It's likely that both issues will eventually come before the city council late this summer.

I would encourage all Rosemead residents to get educated on these issues and help the planning commission and the city council create a city we can all be proud of.

Other Weirdness, from NoVa

Living the tony NoVa neighborhood of Rosemead (heh--that's North of Valley--I'm trying to coin a phrase, but I doubt it will ever catch on), I walk along San Gabriel's segment of Valley Blvd (between Del Mar and the Rubio Wash) 5 or 10 times each week.  Over the years, I have noticed that the walls of the buildings along Valley are not parallel to the street curb.

All (or nearly all) of the buildings are offset about five or ten degrees.

OK, This is Just Weird!

On the front page of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that was delivered to my door this morning, the lead headline was a story concerning the fire chief and the city of Rosemead butting heads over a proposed new ordinance.

But that story is nowhere on the news page of the on-line version.  Instead, the lead story is this:

Congratulations, Heriberto "Eddie" Lima!

I was reading the press release for the 2007 graduation commencement at Cal State L.A.  Each year, the press release singles out select graduates for special recognition.  This year, one of the selectees is a Rosemead resident, Heriberto "Eddie" Lima.  I've never had him as a student, but the press release notes that he earned his MS in biology (he would have walked last night), and has been accepted to the doctoral program in immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Free Fireworks!

I was also told that, before the city manager evaluation, the council voted to end the $3 entrance fee to Rosemead Park on the Fourth of July.  Yay!

Yes, I know that three dollars is not a lot of money.  But it's more than zero.  So a lot of people the past few years have contented themselves with watching the fireworks from the sidewalks, lawns, parking lots, or what ever, just outside the fence.
