Local schools receive Title 1 award

EGPNews.com MUSD Schools Receive Title I Academic Achievement Award. Title 1 are fund that are given schools with some low-income kids. The goal is to raise scores for lower income and underperforming students, as well as the entire school.

"Sobriety" Checkpoints

According to the NYT, since 2006, police have increased their use of sobriety checkpoints.

At these "sobriety" checks, they also check for licenses. If drivers lack licenses, the cars are impounded. Recovering the car can cost in the range of $2,000 to cover fines and impound fees.

Vulcan Comment Period Extended

Today's SGV Tribune reports that the comment period for the Vulcan mining proposal in Azusa has been extended to Feb. 20.

SGV News at Risk

Whether you like the SGVN papers or not, it's always sad to see the continued decline of newspapers, and Dean Singleton, owner of the SGVN, is facing bankruptcy.

Ron Kaye at the LA Progressive writes about this.

The demand for news hasn't declined, but ad revenues have. The problem we're facing is paying the writers and researchers to produce the news. Contrary to what "crowdsourcers" say, it takes a lot of work to be a professional journalist. This has to be figured out.

Montebllo Hills Project Delayed by City Hall Turmoil

Apparently, being caught up in a recall election is slowing down a decision on the Montebello Hills Specific Project. That's a proposal to take the last major open space in the Montebello Hills and put in a bunch of condos.
