Please Vote Once to Stop Wal-Mart!!!

Please visit www.sgvtribune.com and vote "yes" on the Rosemead Recall Poll.  The poll is on the front page.  Currently, the "no" votes outnumber the "yes" votes.

E-Mail from "Wake Up Wal-Mart"

Ed S. forwarded this message to me.  I'm posting it on his behalf.

Dear Edward,

In the midst of a public relations quagmire, sluggish sales, declining worker morale, and problems breaking into new demographic and socio-economic markets, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott announced today he is taking a month long "vacation."

City Council Meeting, Tuesday, April 25, 8pm: Appeal of Imperial v. Castruita and Traffic Issues on Delta Ave

On 8pm Tuesday, April 25, the Rosemead City Council will meet in regular session.  Two issues of concern to us will be on the agenda.

1.  A motion to appeal the decision in Imperial v. Castruita will be made.  In light of the recent decision by the Federal Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to grant an en banc rehearing of Padilla v. Lever, it is likely that Judge Klausner can be persuaded to lift his preliminary restraining order against our original recall election.  The city council will discuss that issue in closed session.  However, I would encourage people who support an appeal of Imperial v. Castruita to come to the City Council meeting early and address that issue during the public comment period, which is held at the *beginning* of each city council meeting.

Endorsement of Candidates?

Attention All Members:  Please make every effort to attend the SOC/YOR PAC meeting, Wednesday, April 26, 2006.  We will be discussing the possibility of endorsing several candidates for state and federal elected office

More Collateral Damage from Padilla v. Lever

Well, in one of those "Good News/Bad News" stories, two other political jurisdictions have become caught up in the fall out over Padilla v. Lever. Three initiatives in San Bernardino County and one in Monterey County have been pushed off the ballot by federal district court decisions similar to that issued in Imperial v. Castruita [the suit in which then-Mayor Jay Imperial sued Rosemead to keep the recall election off the ballot because he knew he could not win].

New Mayor and Mayor Pro Temp in Rosemead

In Rosemead [and in most General Law cities], the city council elects a new mayor and mayor pro temp from among their membership once each year.  In most cities, the rotation is automatic and non-controversial.  After all, the positions are largely ceremonial.  But, in Rosemead, nothing happens without controversy.

At the city council meeting on Marh 28, Gary Taylor, mayor pro temp from last year, was elevated to mayor.  John Nunuz was elected the new mayor pro temp.  Both votes were by 3-2 margins.  Councilmembers Taylor, Imperial, and Clark formed the three-person majority voting for Taylor for mayor, while councilmembers Clark, Nunez, and Tran formed the three-person majority electing Nunez mayor pro temp.

Alcoholic Beverage Control--Informational Meeting

"Representatives from the Department of Alcoholic Bevarges Control will be explaining the ABC hearing and protest process as it relates to the Wal-Mart application in the city of Rosemead."

Evergreen Baptist Church, 1255 San Gabriel Blvd, Rosemead, CA  91770.  The ABC contact name is Hilarie Vasquez, at 626-927-1060.

Apparently the ABC wants to "educate" us about the licensing process.  Attend the meeting if you can, both to learn about the process and to let them know that you oppose a 24-hour liquor outlet across the street from an elementary school.

Wal-Mart Gender Discrimination Class Action

The lead attorney in a gender discrimination suit against Wal-Mart is having a presentation at UCLA on Wednesday, March 22, 4:45 pm - 6:00 pm.  I'm attaching the flyer in Word format.
